Students studying an Agricultural subject at Dakabin are able to be involved in the following extracurricular activities:
Stud cattle show team (Established 1991)
The students train and show cattle for other cattle studs, as well as breeding, training and exhibiting our own cattle. These include:
- Square Meater Stud
- Lowline Stud
- Show Steers
Students train before school and at lunchtimes and attend shows on the weekends.
Stud sheep show team (Established 1995)
The school has been successfully breeding and showing Suffolk sheep. Students train at lunchtimes and attend shows on the weekends.
Sunflower Trail – University of Queensland
Student design an experiment where they plant and grow sunflowers starting in February each year and then compare their flowers and are judged on their assignments.
Hy-Line Brown School Egg Laying Competition
The Ekka has partnered with Australian Egg Corporation Limited and Specialised Breeders Australia to provide schools with six (6) eighteen week old Hy-Line Brown hens.
Schools prepare and exhibit their three (3) best hens to take to Ekka, with the competition consisting of three main elements:
Bee Keeping
Dakabin has a hive that the students rob during the year producing quality honey that is sold around the school by the students.
Small Animal Nurseries
Students and Year 11 and 12 Certificate I and II Animal Studies and Year 9 Small Animal Studies run several animal nurseries each year at local primary schools and community festivals. These are run mainly on the weekends.
External Agricultural Programs available
- Ag Inspirations is a 3-day industry specific tour organised by the AgForce School to Industry Program allows students from years 10-12 to visit multiple agribusiness enterprises.
