Inter-House Carnivals

We hold 3 inter-house carnivals at Dakabin SHS each year. It has been the tradition that the following occurs:

Swimming – 3rd Friday of term 1, year 8 and 9 only. This is the year 7/8/9 program for the day, so all students are expected to attend. Permission must be given ahead of time, as well as payment being made to the school office. The natural progression from this carnival is that offers are made to first and second place swimmers in each of the four competitive 50m events to swim at the Pine Rivers District carnival.
In 2013, this was not possible as state, regional and district dates were pushed forward. Students were therefore encouraged to self -nominate in weeks one and two, through the sports co-ordinator.  2013, the sports department has decided to initiate a new procedure and run a second year 7/8/9 swimming carnival on the Thursday of week 9, term 4 (second last week of school).
This will enable us to invite our future year 7’s to their first high school carnival, and also eliminate the need for rushed nominations in February 2014. Provisions will be available for new students in 2014 to nominate, under the provision that they have adequate times for their races.
Cross-Country  - the cross-country carnival takes place on Friday the 10th of May in 2013. Students are required to nominate ahead of time on the noticeboard at the Hall. They will only be excused from class if this procedure is followed. They are expected to be in attendance at the oval at the beginning of lunch that day. In 2012, an Adidas School Fun Run fundraiser was run in conjunction with the school cross-country carnival, and this provided an opportunity for students to earn money for sports programs at the school and win prizes themselves.
The run itself takes the students off-campus, along footpaths on Marsden Road, onto Ann Street, then Thompson Road an on to the train path back up to the school oval. The run itself is just over 4km. Students are encouraged to train, and opportunities will be provided by school HPE and coaching staff.
The top 4 students in each age category will be invited to participate at the next level, which has traditionally been the Metropolitan North regional carnival. At the time of writing this outline, there is a possibility that a Pine Rivers District Carnival may take place this year.
Track and Field (Athletics) – The inter-house track and field carnival runs over two days in the last week of school in June. On Monday 17 June, periods 1 and 2, as well as morning tea, are dedicated to students who have nominated (at the Hall the previous week) to participate in a select number of field events, as well as the 1500m at morning tea. It is important to note here that for the high jump, if students wish to perform the Fosbury Flop they MUST be able to provide a certificate from a Little Athletics coach or certified coach that they are approved to perform this technique. No exceptions will be made. The high jump does not run at the school carnival. On Tuesday 18 June, there is a full day/all school carnival in place of the regular school program. All students are expected to attend.
The top 2 students in each event, in each age group, will be extended invitations to participate in the Pine Rivers District Carnival, which takes place towards the end of July. From there, they may qualify for the Metropolitan Regional carnival in August (a 2 day event).
