Dance

 Junior Secondary - 9 & 10

Dance
All dance classes at Dakabin SHS are conducted in a well-equipped, air conditioned dance studio. A safe environment is fostered in dance both physically and mentally to ensure all students can focus on the dance task at hand. This is an
important aspect in the Performing Arts faculty to allow students to always feel safe and comfortable to push their own boundaries and do their very best at all times.

Safe dance practices are a major focus and students become self-aware of these processes and moderate their learning pace according to their own physical ability. The focus in year 9 dance is to become familiar with safe dance practices, routines and structures surrounding a practical dance class and the foundation of dance analysis, interpretation and evaluation.

DANCE (DAN)
AUTHORITY SUBJECT

The course involves the study of Dance as an art form. Students experience a range of dance styles throughout the course, such as – contemporary, jazz, musical theatre, jive, etc. The course is composed of a study of the central organisers of all dance, that is:

Choreography – where the student learns how to choreograph dances, to understand this process and to interpret the dance that is made;

Performing – where the student learns the technical and expressive skills of dance; and

Appreciating – where the students are able to effectively analyse various dance works, through both evaluation and interpretation of live and recorded works.

Through the study of these three central organisers of dance, students develop self-confidence, the necessary skills to work effectively as a group, higher order thinking skills, effective communication and leadership skills.
The course is not primarily prevocational but rather aims to allow students to develop as informed and motivated individuals who are capable of independent judgement and who can cognitively utilise higher order thinking skills.
